Song Spotlight: When the Fight Calls
As a worship leader, music is a big part of my life. But my love for discovering new music & worship songs expands far beyond my work responsibilities and into nearly every moment of my life. What I have found is that as I latch onto albums or artists through different seasons, I unintentionally form a kind of sound track for my life. I know I am not alone in hearing a certain song and having it emotionally rush me back to a specific time or a specific place in life's journey. And spiritually, there have been certain songs that have felt as if they were given to me in exactly the right moment.
For all of these reasons and more, I've decided to occasionally spotlight different songs. My hope is to share some of the songs that have impacted me the most, and to give you an inside peek at what my life's sound track sounds like.
Welcome to your first Song Spotlight!
The song "When the Fight Calls" by Hillsong Young & Free has become one of my favorites, and a regular cry of my heart, over the past year. There are certain times in life when you may find yourself at a loss for words, yet you make the wonderful discovery in the knick of time of a song that seems to perfectly communicate the feelings you are harboring within. Or as is the case with this one, you find a song attaining lyrics that perfectly describe and encourage the direction that you hope to propel yourself in.
For me, this song has come to do both. It is a fight song that seems to perfectly perpetuate a fearless hope while living in the midst of a struggle.
I don't know how many times over the past year I wailed along with the bridge,
“And I won’t let the storm weather my heart,
won’t let the darkness beat me down,
sing in the night, my hope alive in You.
And I’ll walk through the fire and not be burned,
Pray in the fight and watch it turn.
Jesus tonight I give it all to you."
These words served as an anthem on so many dark days, and a declaration in so many good ones. Like we see in the song, why should we be afraid of the waves when we are loved by the one who owns the tide?
I really do appreciate a lot of the songs put out by Hillsong in general, and this song is no different. The original version is fantastic, and great to sing along to, but the acoustic version takes the cake for me. The only thing better than a hopeful fight song is one that can be set to a soulful rhythm and find a way to really grab the heart.
Enjoy it for yourself!
